If all arguments already made still seem nebulous and baseless,
learning and understanding microformats can be viewed as just a great
way learn how to write good semantic markup, caring about HTML
semantics, caring about your Web data and its structure.

HTML was relegated to junk format by a great deal of developers, and
that is probably a big reason why it is so hard to start the
Renaissance (great post, Ryan, by the way:

My everyday work is far from creme de la creme of markup greats. I
work in HTML "skid row", populated by Dreamweaver "slicers" and
backend coders. Neither crowd "gets" HTML, neither crowd wants to.
Designer-types draw pretty pictures, coders spit out data. Everybody's
happy,  except nobody wins.
