Per HTML4, if you're using a rel value that isn't defined in HTML4, then you
SHOULD use a profile.
Thus I'd say that a short XMDP document (with perhaps a normative reference
to the Atom 1.0 spec for the definition of rel="self") would be a good idea
for that. E.g. hReview normatively references Atom 1.0 for the definition
of rel="self".
