This would also cause a breakdown at the link resolver level.

Again, only using the OpenURL as a point of reference...

Something like:
<span class="au"><span class="aufirst"><span
class="auinit1">L</span>orin</span> <span
class="aulast">Hochstein</span></span>
would be ideal.  You could use any subset of that, as well (well, except
aufirst or auinit1, of course) for simplicity.  "au" will be the most
problematic, however, for the reasons Alf states.
