Paul, there is a free trial version of JAWS at
http://www.freedomsci.com/fs_downloads/jaws.asp. Last time I checked
it ran for 40 minutes after which you had to reboot to be able to
launch it again.

I wrote a Firefox extension called Fangs which emulates a screen
reader (you may guess which). Fangs also works with the DOM like JAWS.
It is available at http://www.standards-schmandards.com/fangs

Please note that Jaws may alter your desktop icons (making them
bigger) after installation.
