‘Heard of’ perhaps not, but it is very, very widely used.

On spitting the spec completely I agree; it isn't really friendly to  
anyone wishing to work with both specs. But I think that ‘extensions’  
should be very clearly labelled such that it is abundantly clear when  
vcard is diverged from. Either through <strong>ly emphasised wording  
prefixing each extension (if integrated into the sections also  
containing vcard properties), or placed on a separate extensions page.
