This page is part of the effort to define a link-preview microformat or addition to an existing microformat. Per the process:

Formats

Previous efforts at link-preview formats:

Proprietary

Proprietary efforts at link-preview formats (proposed, maintained, and supported by only one vendor)

Twitter Cards

See http://indiewebcamp.com/Twitter_Cards (and expand inline here)

Open

There have been a couple of standards created explicitly for information for link previews.

OEmbed

  • oEmbed - since 2009. However it requires an extra endpoint (URL, different language(s) etc.)

Open Graph Protocol

Though proposed and maintained exclusively by Facebook, their Open Graph Protocol is licensed with a OWFa license which is quite open (allows derivative works etc.)

OGP is far more well established since it works in HTML, and Facebook immediately shows results using it.
