This page documents the effort to define a microformat for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Identifiers identifiers]. Identifiers are currently found all over the web but not in a predictable way. Examples of identifiers include [http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/index.asp ISBN], [http://www.issn.org/ ISSN] [http://www.upcdatabase.com/ UPC], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASIN ASIN], [http://musicbrainz.org/tagger/id-intro.html MusicBrainz IDs]. Indeed it could be argued that URLs themselves are identifiers in the abstract. How cool would it be to able to identify these and resolve them? Welcome to the dream of the semantic web.

Examples of identifiers include ISBN, ISSN UPC, ASIN, MusicBrainz IDs. Indeed it could be argued that URLs themselves are identifiers in the abstract. How cool would it be to able to identify, capture and repurpose these while browsing the web? First step is to simply allow them to be discovered.
