This page documents an effort to define a microformat for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Identifiers identifiers]. HTML already deals well with Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). However there are lots of other types of identifiers in web content that cannot be easily identified as such. Some of these include [http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/index.asp ISBN], [http://www.issn.org/ ISSN] [http://www.upcdatabase.com/ UPC], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASIN ASIN], [http://musicbrainz.org/tagger/id-intro.html MusicBrainz IDs].

UID

This page documents an effort to define a microformat for identifiers. This effort came about from two angles:

  • the need for a module that hCard and hCalendar could reference for defining the behavior of UID
  • the need for marking up freeform identifiers that are found in web content
