I'd like to see the *reference* to a profile being strongly
recommended, as ranted at length in my previous "URIs" post. This
would mean that you wouldn't necessarily have to parse the whole page,
unless it contained the profile identifier and hence data you were
interested in.

Indeed. 

But I'd be wary of about mandating an XMDP profile, at least until
reference to other schema docs and the like can be easily supported in
a machine-readable fashion. I believe it will be easy enough to do
this for RDF (I forget exactly - something like a reference to the
XSLT in a  <meta> element). Not so sure about XML Schema/DTDs/RelaxNG
though.
