Not to be a process-prick, but shouldn't all the various ideas not be
bandied about as brainstorming options [1] rather than starting with a
spec [2].

(2)

Any thoughts as to whether using LABEL [3] would work for you ... it's
stretching the definition only a little, but validators don't seem to
mind.
