D'abord vous pouvez utiliser les types de liens comme spécifié dans le HTML 4. Un exemple bien connu de cela est rel="stylesheet". Ensuite, vous "pouvez déployer l'attribut tag en utilisant un profil", mais "HTML ne spécifie pas/ne recommande pas un format de profil". XMDP peut être utilisé pour définir formellement de nouvelles valeurs rel.
Que signifie vraiment une valeur rel ?
Les valeurs rel en HTML suivent un modèle cohérent qui au minimum sous-entend un design réfléchi. rel décrit la relation d'un hyperlien en termes de quelle est la destination (href), vers la source, ou de la perspective de la source. rel="stylesheet" est peut-être l'exemple le plus facile à comprendre de cette façon, parce qu'il dit que cette ressource sur ça (indiquée avec le href) est une "feuille de style" pour le document en cours. De la même manière le lien rel="help" déclare que la ressource indiqué par le href est "help" (par exemple un fichier aide ou une FAQ) pour le document en cours. Tout le reste des valeurs définies dans le HTML4 suit aussi ce modèle d'être un nom qui étiquette la ressource indiquée par le href, de la perspective du document en cours.
Alors que veut dire "rev" ?
"rev" est l'opposé précis (ou "reverse") de l'attribut "rel". Par exemple, un lien rev="help" indique que le document actuel est "help" pour la ressource indiquée par le href.
Est-ce que rel est à sens unique ou bidirectionnel ?
Bien que la spécification HTML4 ne soit pas spécifique sur ce point, toutes les valeurs rel dans la spécification HTML4 suivent un modèle très cohérent qui indique une directionnalité spécifique vers la valeur de l'attribut rel. La seule exception à cela est la valeur "alternate", qui est véritablement symétrique par héritage, ainsi rel="alternate" signifie vraiment la même chose que rev="alternate". Je dis vraiment parce qu'en théorie (et en pratique) une d'une parie d'alternates est probablement plus définitive, et par conséquent l'une est plus une ressource primaire, avec l'autre étant une alternative. En théorie, vous pourriez déployer rel avec une nouvelle valeur, par exemple "original" qui pourrait être utilisée pour pointer en arrière la version originale d'un document. Ce pourrait être utilisé par exemple pour les traductions, là où les traductions d'un document pointeraient en arrière vers l'original avec rel="original".
Est-ce 'rev' devrait être utilisé
Compte tenu du fait que l'attribut 'rev' a été plus souvent mal utilisé par les auteurs que proprement utilisé (Google Code: Web Authoring Statistics: Link Relationships) est-ce même vraiment une bonne idée d'utiliser rev ?
La réponse courte est malheureusement "non". L'utilisation de "rev" DEVRAIT être évitée.
Néanmoins, VoteLinks, est en train de devenir grand père parce qu'il a été utilisé comme tel dès le début. Aucun microformats à l'avenir qui utilise 'rev' ne devrait être développé.
Est ce que les attributs "rel" et les types de liens en général sont simplement du document vers document ?
La vaste majorité des valeurs rel définies dans le HTML4 sont à partir d'un document vers un document. rel="stylesheet" est un peu une exception, parce qu'elle va à partir d'un document HTML vers une feuille de style, ce qui est plus comme un ensemble de règles de style et d'instructions qu'un "document" au sens classique du terme. Deux exceptions notables sont rel="copyright" et rel="bookmark" qui décrivent la relation à partir du document actuel vers (potentiellement) seulement une partie d'un document. L'attribut 'rev' ajoute une perspective intéressante à cette question. Spécifiquement, 12.3.1 du HTML4 montre un exemple de deux liens l'un utilisant rel et l'autre utilisant rev qui veulent dire la même chose. De ce fait, les types de liens en général peuvent être soit à partir d'un document entier ou une partie d'un document vers un document entier ou une partie d'un document. Par exemple, la spécification RelTag introduit la valeur rel="tag", et note qu'elle indique une relation à partir d'un document ou une portion importante à l'intérieur d'un document. Pour finir, XFN pousse rel probablement le plus loin, parce qu'il utilise rel pour indiquer une relation de personne à personne. Ce champ de personne à personne n'a pas été introduit par XFN, mais simplement adopté. Il a été introduit par les blogueurs qui ont pris l'habitude de lier d'autres blogueurs par leurs noms et par conséquent ont utilisé les URLs des blogs des personnes comme des proxies pour les personnes elles-même.
Y a t'il (avait) un usage approprié de rel ?
Non. Le problème à l'utilisation de rel pour VoteLinks est apparu avec l'exemple suivant :

Ceci ne fait clairement aucun sens, et n'a certainement pas été l'intention de VoteLinks. Ironiquement, l'inverse fait beaucoup plus de sens :
Le document actuel est un "vote-for" la ressource indiquée par http://www2005.org.

Le document actuel, comme un proxy pour la personne qui l'a écrit (par ex. le blogueur dont c'est le blog), est un "vote-for" la ressource indiquée par http://www2005.org.
Heureusement, l'attribut "rev" capture cette relation sémantique inversée, et de ce fait l'exemple au-dessus devrait être écrit comme ça :
<a href="http://www2005.org" rev="vote-for">WWW2005 est une conférence géniale</a>
Et de ce fait le VoteLinks a été modifié pour utiliser "rev" au lieu de "rel", afin de maintenir les valeurs biens connus et facilement compréhensibles de "vote-for", "vote-abstain" et "vote-against".
Quand une valeur 'rel' fait référence à une relation vers ou à partir d'une page ou d'un document, fait-elle simplement référence à la page, ou aux contenus de la page, ou aux deux ?
Le consensus (et la convention) est que de telles valeurs rel font référence à la page elle-même y compris ses contenus immédiats, mais pas par exemple pour les contenus embarqués d'images, objets, frames, etc.
