This page documents the effort to define a microformat for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Identifiers identifiers]. Identifiers are currently found all over the web but not in a predictable way. Examples of identifiers include [http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/index.asp ISBN], [http://www.issn.org/ ISSN] [http://www.upcdatabase.com/ UPC], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASIN ASIN], [http://musicbrainz.org/tagger/id-intro.html MusicBrainz IDs]. Indeed it could be argued that URLs themselves are identifiers in the abstract. How cool would it be to able to identify, capture and repurpose these while browsing the web?
