Thats why you use a list:
<ol>
<li><cite>Chris Messina</cite> <q>A chat is a list of
definitions.</q></li>
<li><cite>Kevin Marks</cite> <q>No, a chat is a list of
quotations.</q></li>
</ol>
Which has a very nice default rendering.
