That's debatable. However, I omitted the species' vernacular name:

        <span class="biota"> [1]
           <abbr class="binominal" title="Solanum tuberosum">
              <span class="vernacular"> [3]
                Potato
              </span>
              <span class="variety"> [2]
                'Maris Piper'
              </span>
           </abbr>
        </span>

[1] assuming "biota" as the parent category.

[2] assuming the abbreviation "var" is not used.

[3] assuming "vernacular" and not "common" is not used.
